Sand for riding arena
What circumstances influence the cost of an arena? In order of action we could mention: the type of land where we plan to build it, because it is not the same a sandy land than a clayey one; the necessary earthwork; install or not drainage; the type of sand and the proximity or remoteness to the supply gravel pit; the fencing and irrigation.
If you are looking for a track to work your horses at home, without great pretensions in terms of the construction model, without drainage, taking care of the collection of sand … in short cheap; its execution should not cost you more than about 10 € / m2.
If on the other hand you prefer to have a guaranteed track, we can offer you two ways of construction that we explain below with prices calculated for about 1.500m2 and in a radius of maximum 80km from Madrid:
They are tracks built with ECORASTER grids (photo above) as a differentiating characteristic element, for training and competition. The grids have 3 fundamental functions: they serve as an anti-pollutant, that is to say, they do not allow the stones of the lower layers to rise, nor the sand of the upper layer to fall; they allow a total drainage, in 100% of the surface of the track and stabilize the ground, distribute the surface load and its elasticity protects joints and tendons.
How to build a riding arena for horses
There is not much literature on the construction of riding arenas, but there is an extensive commercial and technical offer available on the market and indispensable experiences in the field of the construction of riding arenas for different equestrian uses, in different climates and with different materials.
A surface must be achieved that does not sink with humidity, that does not vary essentially its resistance with footsteps and that when dry, forms as little dust as possible; that contains materials with a low noise factor against the action of hooves and is resistant to wear and tear and decomposition. It must have a certain flexibility in order to reduce the stress on the locomotive apparatus of the animals and, nevertheless, not be very thick, since this would result in a difficult gait and rapid fatigue of the horses. Finally, it is necessary to achieve an equestrian arena with reasonable installation and, above all, maintenance costs.
These are tracks in which the irrigation is buried under the sand layer and basically consists of porous tubes that, through computer control, can inject water when the track requires it and remove it when the humidity is excessive.
Riding arenas for horses
It is not easy to build an equestrian arena to adapt to all these circumstances, to which must be added the need to ensure that the final result is not too soft or too hard, which would cause injuries to the horses. It is also necessary that it has a good drainage, especially important in outdoor tracks, since a large accumulation of water would also harm the animals.
Another aspect to take into account in the construction of a riding arena is the irrigation system. It is as detrimental for the track to have more humidity than is really necessary as it is for it to be dry, since in addition to causing greater deterioration, it can cause injuries to the horses. The most common way to irrigate the track is by means of a sprinkler system.
A track can be composed only of sand, in different granulometries and mixtures. Silica sand is used for this purpose, since it has the capacity to absorb humidity, and once saturated, it repels it as if it were glass, thus providing an optimum surface if the necessary slopes for the evacuation of water that may accumulate in the track have been properly executed.
How much does it cost to make an equestrian track
The geotextile for horse tracks has several functions in equestrian tracks, although the main one is to provide the track with a stability that is very important for the well-being of the horses and their riders. The most important functions are:
The geotextile fibers in equestrian tracks are used by mixing it conveniently with the sand and spreading it evenly throughout the track so that it can fulfill all its qualities to perfection. It can be used both for outdoor and indoor arenas with identical results. It is also used in indoor riding arenas, galloping arenas, walkers and so on.
When building or repairing an equestrian facility floor, one of the difficulties we encounter is the quality and condition of the floor for both indoor and outdoor arenas. Thanks to the application of geotextiles we can see a great improvement in the floors, with many advantages and benefits for the care of the horse’s limbs and to obtain a track in perfect condition that gives us an excellent performance and the greatest possible durability. Some of the advantages that we can find applying geotextiles and products such as Equidren are:
