In the winters, this works well, since the outside air is much cooler and may contain much less humidity than the warm air inside. Running the HRVs all the time can bring in too much cold air, causing your furnace to work harder than necessary.
Set the control to the highest setting in warmer weather; lower the setting as the weather cools. In winter, set the dehumidistat low enough to prevent condensation on windows.
In cold climates, the cool air is warmed by this process, while in warm climates, the cool air is cooled by the stale air if the indoor temperature is cooler than the outdoor temperature.

The DES/DX with ERV includes an enthalpy exchange energy recovery wheel between the exhaust pipe and the outside air before the pre-cooling coil. Incorporating the ERV in the DES/DX system tempers the outside air, eliminating significant compressor tonnage and thereby reducing overall energy consumption considerably. The air is then efficiently dehumidified before entering the space. The outside air is cooled and dehumidified through one or more cooling circuits before entering the desiccant wheel. The desiccant wheel provides additional dehumidification as it returns the air temperature back to neutral space conditions (but much lower % relative humidity). Waste heat from the condenser is used to reactivate the desiccant wheel.
The DES/DX ERV unit is a highly efficient dedicated outdoor air unit that combines the benefits of base desiccant dehumidification with energy recovery ventilation. Outdoor air is tempered in the ERV section and dried with a cooling coil followed by further dehumidification with a desiccant wheel.
