The author of the study, Rebecca Schaumberg of Stanford University’s School of Business, has tried to understand why in offices, stores and factories there is never a lack of someone willing to deal with any kind of request. Schaumberg has analyzed different work situations to assess the psychological behaviors and attitudes of employees.

Among psychologists, it is widely believed that guilt drives many of our actions. All the times that, for example, we decide to stay in the office on a Friday night, to have the weekend off, we do so because it is difficult to really feel relaxed and spend a carefree evening, knowing that we still have backlog of work. “At work, a lot of times the feeling of guilt leads to acting in a positive way and this causes many people to end up taking on a leadership role,” says Schaumberg.

After considering the issue, this farmer realized that by answering his employees’ questions and solving their problems he was encouraging them to continue this bad habit. Instead, he needed to support his supervisor by letting the employees come to him with their problems.
