As I already described in the Scrum Guide Overview article, refinement is the event in which User Stories are worked on to evaluate their description and estimation. To review the User Stories all members of the Scrum Team must be present:

Initially the Product Owner will write the User Stories based on what the Stakeholders tell him/her. These User Stories will usually have a very high level of specification and therefore need to be redefined. These User Stories are called EPIC’s (a set of EPIC’s that define a module or subsist of the product is called a Theme).

With everything described above, we can get a vague idea of what the Product Backlog Refinement event should be. However, at least this is what has happened to me, some doubts arise such as: And when we really do the Refinement? Are there techniques to successfully carry out this event? And to answer these doubts I have created this post.

From the Scrum Guide I got the conclusion that the Product Backlog refinement should be done during the Planning Sprint. We know that the Planning Sprint should not last more than 8 hours for a 4-week Sprint. It is also true that the refinement should not take more than 10% of the effort of the Development Team.

Normally, weeks are used as a scale of measurement in the duration of a sprint, being traditional in most teams to determine the duration of their Sprints of 2 weeks and 3 weeks.

What are Daily Meetings? It is a meeting between team members in which each one inspects the work that the others are doing: dependencies between tasks, progress towards the Sprint goal and obstacles that may impede this goal.

With an agenda in hand, work through the items one by one, crossing them off as you go. Once you finish everything on the agenda, the meeting is over. Don’t make the mistake of trying to fill the allotted time. If your one-hour meeting ends in 21 minutes, so be it.
