La Fontaine’s fables are one of the summits of classicism and a masterpiece of French literature of all times. Inspired by classical models, from Aesop to Horace, but also by the tradition of oriental tales, most of them feature anthropomorphic animals that embody human society and its faults. In 1926, shortly after leaving Russia to settle in France, Marc Chagall began illustrating Jean de La Fontaine’s Fables on behalf of the publisher Ambroise Vollard. Because of the high costs of the first printing trials, only a few plates of the hundreds of gouaches made were engraved. These gave rise to three exhibitions presented in 1930 in Paris, Brussels and Berlin, before being dispersed around the world. This book presents a third of Chagall’s gouaches. These works occupy an important place in the artist’s oeuvre because they mark both the break with the Judeo-Russian imaginary of his origins and the influence of the cubist avant-garde and constructivist movements.
