Is it wrong to question a pastor?

Honor your shepherds

“And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2: 16-17

In this passage we see that God gives a command to Adam and Eve, they may eat of every tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for if they did, they would die. What I want you to ask yourselves today is: what is it that we do not read right after God gives them that command? What we do not read is Adam questioning God’s commandment. Adam doesn’t ask God, “Why can’t we eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?” Why? Because Adam was clear that God was God, the sovereign and infinitely wise God creator of the whole universe. Adam knew that he could fully trust that what God told him was true and good for him.

Next, we see what Satan does, namely, he makes Eve question God’s word. Satan tells Eve, “Ye shall not surely die: for God knoweth that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3: 4-5). Will you not die? Surely God had said that they would die! But Eve questions God’s word and we read in the next verse,

Questions for Christian pastors

The Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 1:9 “…that there is nothing new under the sun.” (The American Bible). This can be applied to the strategies used by Satan throughout the centuries. Satan’s most effective and oldest strategy is found in Genesis 3:1-5.

But the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made; and he said unto the woman, Because God hath said unto you, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, Of the fruit of the trees of the garden shall ye eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.  4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die;5 but God knoweth that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil. Reina Valera 1960 (RVR 1960)

But his strategy does not end there; to close with a flourish, the Devil offers a new “revelation” that has nothing at all to do with what God has established as truth; the devil told Eve, “but God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Obey the shepherd bible

Obey your shepherds (Explanation of Hebrews 13:17)Hebrews 13:17 “Obey your shepherds, and submit yourselves unto them: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not grumbling, because it is not profitable unto you.”

(You may also be interested in: The doctrine of Balaam)This exegetical study focuses on the Greek translation, peitho , in Hebrews 13:17. The word is always translated as “obey” in the different translations. Due to a lack of understanding of the expression “obey your shepherds”, and of the importance of the meaning behind this word, it has led many to blind obedience to the ministry and to wrongly assert their authority over the saints.

Many times this verse is taken out of context, which allows many to abuse their authority in the gospel unchallenged. I do not believe this is always intentional, but stems from a misunderstanding of the Greek behind the English word “obey” in saying obey your pastors.

As much as God is love, he is also just, true, merciful, Holy, etc, these are his attributes, you must understand this first to understand that he also has wrath (but Holy) Psalms 5;5 /Psalms 7;11/Psalms 60;1/ and some of the prophets speak of this wrath.
