Curious George in Spanish Jorge Travels the Monkey River

Fed by the Owens River, this landlocked watershed was once a healthy ecosystem, but since 1941 when it was decided to divert the waters to provide resources for the growing areas of Los Angeles, it has become a lake that looks like it’s from another planet. Salinity began to increase at dizzying levels, reaching 280 million tons of dissolved salts.

Such is the aspect of this amazing area that the incredible Mark Twain mentioned it in his book of travel literature, “The Innocents Abroad”, chronicling it on board the ship Quaker City.

“The Diver”, is the title of a photo taken in the lake, served for the album “Wish You Were Here” by the legendary Pink Floyd. Clint Eastwood even took several shots in a movie, “Altos LLanos”, starring and directed by himself. For the filming he built an entire town on the shores of Mono Lake.

On one occasion we have already included Monkey Lake among the most fascinating lakes on the planet. No wonder. A lake that contains in its interior 280 million tons of dissolved saline soda and that, consequently, presents some curious formations that crown its surface and invade its little flowing bottom. The so-called calcareous tuffs.

It is a landscape from another world. Solitary, melancholic, almost phantasmagoric.  “There are no fish in Mono Lake – no frogs, no tadpoles – nothing to make life pleasant,” Mark Twain said of it in one of his stories. But nevertheless, it hides much more than meets the eye.

Its evolution has not been in vain. To this day Mono Lake stars in the snapshots of millions of curious travelers. Also a photograph of the album ‘Wish you were here’ by Pink Floyd, and several film appearances. This lake, apparently dead, is quite an eminence. So it is more alive than it seems. And as we shall see, in more ways than one.
