Ohio (English pronunciation: /oʊˈhaɪ.oʊ/ ( listen), /ojáyo/) is one of the fifty states that, along with Washington D. C. form the United States of America. Its capital and most populous city is Columbus.

Ohio is one of the country’s major industrial centers.[3] In addition to industry, its other major sources of income are finance, coal mining (which helped make Ohio one of the country’s leading industrial powers), agriculture, and tourism.

The rapid industrialization of the state made several people native to the state notable for their inventions and pioneering.[4] Thomas Edison was born in Ohio and the Wright Brothers (known worldwide for being the first to fly in an airplane, although this is controversial) also grew up here. Another world-famous Ohio native is Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon.

The first European explorers to travel the region were the French. Until 1763, the Ohio region was part of the French colony of New France, then passing to British control. With American independence and the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the United States came to control the region. Ohio became the first territory in the Northwest Territory to be elevated to statehood, and the 17th to enter the Union, on March 1, 1803.[8] Westward expansion and the construction of numerous railroads in the state, the discovery of numerous coal fields, and a strong agricultural industry made Ohio a major industrial power by the mid-19th century. Ohio-born Ulysses S. Grant was a major Union leader during the American Civil War.

U.S. electoral systemThe “swing” states carry a lot of weight because the country’s presidential electoral system encourages it. It is an indirect election in which citizens do not choose their preferred candidate, but their vote is directed to some compromisarios or electors who make up the Electoral College. These are the ones who finally elect the president and vice-president by majority vote. The candidate who wins the election in the state is awarded to all of the pledges of that state.

The U.S. has a total of 538 commissioners distributed among 50 states according to their population. This figure is equivalent to the sum of the members of the country’s two legislative chambers, the House of Representatives (435) and the Senate (100), plus 3 delegates from Washington DC (which has no representatives in the courts at the national level).

The New York Times found that official counts in the United States and more than a dozen other countries have undercounted deaths during the coronavirus outbreak because of the limited availability of testing.

The Times’ data collection for this page comes from state and local health agency reports, a process that has not changed because of the Donald Trump administration’s requirement that hospitals bypass the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and send all patient information to a central database in Washington.
