Positive discipline is effective in the long term, since in order to eliminate or decrease inappropriate practices and behaviors, the child’s thoughts and feelings must be taken into consideration.
Because of this, it focuses on creating a change in all the components involved in the child’s behaviors. Therefore, the positive discipline approach is characterized by a set of long-term strategies.
The desire of many parents is to be able to raise their children in a firm and respectful manner. But sometimes, when reading about positive discipline, they find that parenting moves between struggles with a lot of permissiveness or outbursts of firmness (yelling or mistreatment).
This leads to great confusion as to how to act correctly towards children. To think that in the face of bad behavior, there is no consequence is far-fetched, especially for the more traditional (authoritarian) parenting styles.
When this style of parenting is introduced, many controversies and confrontations arise with the style of parenting to which most parents were subjected. This sometimes leads them to desist or resist to continue with this way of upbringing.
