Charleston is a city in South Carolina, United States. With 120,000 inhabitants in 2010, it is the second most populous city in the state, second only to the state capital, Columbia. The seat of the county of the same name, it is also located in Berkeley County, in the east of the state, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

The city was founded as Charlestown or Charles Towne, Carolina in 1670, and moved to its present location in 1680. Until 1800, Charleston was the fifth largest city in North America, after Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Quebec. It adopted its present name in 1783. Also known as the Holy City (due to the prominence of churches, as seen by the numerous steeples that dot the city’s skyline).

The city of Charleston is established at the midpoint of the South Carolina coastline, at the junction of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The name Charleston is derived from Charles Towne, named for King Charles II of England.

Beginning in the mid-18th century, most of the immigration to the Carolinas came from Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, until the inland population outnumbered the coastal population. The people from the interior of the state found the Charlestonians to be less than brilliant on many issues, setting the stage for several generations of conflict between the Charlestonians and the Charleston elite.
