Airdrie owes its existence to its location on the ‘Hogs Back’ – a ridge of land running east to west.[11] A very important aspect of the town’s history was the Cistercian monks of Newbattle Abbey, which is why the area is called “Monklands”. The monks were farmers and some of their place names survive, for example, Ryefield and Whifflet (the wheat plains). Much of the land they used is known today as “The Four Islands” (a development named after four Scottish islands): Mull, Islay, Iona and Luing in the Petersburn area of modern Airdrie. The monks were also experts in road building. In the 12th century, they laid the original road from Glasgow to Edinburgh via Airdrie and Bathgate, to link with their lands at Newbattle in East Lothian.
