The Peterloo Massacre (or Battle of Peterloo ) took place on August 16, 1819in the grounds of St Peter’s Fields in Manchester in England ( United Kingdom ) when cavalry charged a peaceful demonstration of 60,000 to 80,000 people gathered to demand reform of parliamentary representation.

The end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 led to periods of chronic famine and unemployment that were exacerbated by the introduction of the Corn Laws . By early 1819, the pressure generated by these economic conditions associated with weak parliamentary representation in the north of England had led to a rise in political radicalism. In response, the Manchester Patriotic Union, a group supporting parliamentary reform, organized a protest which was scheduled to be attended by the famous orator Henry Hunt .

Historian Robert Poole (in) called the Peterloo massacre the watershed event of its time. Newspapers in London and across the country conveyed the horror and disapproval felt in the Manchester area, but the immediate aftermath of Peterloo was the British Parliament’s vote on the Six Acts (en) which drastically curtailed freedom of assembly and the right to demonstrate. The massacre led directly to the founding of The Manchester Guardian (now The Guardian ), but did not accelerate parliamentary reform. In a poll conducted by The Guardian in 2006, Peterloo came second only to the Putney debates as the event in UK history most deserving of a memorial or commemorative memorial. Peterloo is commemorated with a plaque near the site that replaced one criticized for not reflecting the extent of the massacre.
