Printing analog photos

Nowadays, analog photography has given way to digital photography in almost all creative fields, from advertising to journalism, but there are still some lovers who highlight its virtues and prefer the film over the memory card.

Next, he will explain the developing process and the materials you will have to get to do it. You will analyze the different techniques to do it, such as developing by shaking, rotation and immersion and the advantages and disadvantages of each of them.

Carlos will tell you what it takes to develop a roll of photographic film at home, the types of tanks that can be used and the chemicals used in this process to prepare the appropriate dilutions. In addition, you will use a mobile app to help you get through the process faster.

You will see the process of scanning negatives, through different options to digitize your film and you will discover the advantages and disadvantages offered by each alternative. You will also analyze some common mistakes when performing this procedure.

Now that we know how to use our camera, how to master the light with it and how to select the right film for each situation, we find that our counter has reached the limit of 24 or 36 photographs. It’s time to develop.

The rest of the items are things we all have around the house, such as bottles (where to store the chemicals), a funnel (to put the chemicals in your bottle), a thermometer (to measure the temperature of the chemicals), a pair of scissors (to cut the film from the reel) and a pair of tweezers of any kind (clothespins or office tongs with which to hang our negatives during drying).

It is a cylinder generally made of plastic in which inside we find a spiral. This spiral is used to place inside it the film of the reel and that the chemistry contacts with all its surface uniformly.

At this point it will depend on whether our reel is color or black and white, but in this article we will focus on the second option as it is simpler and where I would recommend you to start with your prints.

Just as in digital photography it is possible to take pictures at different sensitivities, the sensitivity of the film is fixed. If we use a 100 ISO film and shoot the first pictures at that sensitivity, we cannot later change to 200 or 400 ISO. Most black and white films on the market offer sensitivities of 50, 100, 200 and 400 ISO. What can we do when light conditions are more critical? Forced black and white development increases the original sensitivity by up to 3 E.V. steps. The secret lies in the development.

Learning how to wind the film in the spiral, keeping the temperature at 20°C and experimenting with different black and white films and developers are the big secrets. Losing the fear of developing at home is the first step to get the most out of our black and white photographs.

I love the 400 ISO sensitivity. Films like Ilford HP5 Plus offer fine grain, wide exposure latitude, a very high tolerance in developing and the ability to force higher sensitivities by up to 3 steps E.V. (3200 ISO). Personally, my limit remains at 1600 ISO, as I consider that the grain/detail ratio ends at this sensitivity. Ilford HP5 Plus also offers excellent value for money than most tube-grain black and white films. Ilford Delta 400 and Kodak T-Max 400 are more expensive and – in my opinion – offer less aesthetically pleasing grain. Kodak Tri-X is another good choice, but is also more expensive than HP5 Plus.
