Standardization (i.e. the establishment of standard quality criteria for products and processes) has become a necessity in today’s societies. These societies do not live in isolation from each other, but are increasingly interconnected. It is therefore essential to adopt common standards to govern their social, political and commercial relations. In this regard, the importance of national and international certification authorities, the bodies that certify that the standards agreed upon to improve goods and services are faithfully complied with, is particularly important.
Broadly speaking, standardization facilitates processes and seeks to benefit all citizens, based on the reality of a globalized society. An example of the need to establish certain common standards for the entire international community can be found in the standardization of the systems by which plugs and sockets have to function. The possibility that each country, in a matter as aseptic as this, would opt for a particular system would lead to considerable losses of money, insecurity and all kinds of dysfunctions.
