The percentage of women who suffer this type of pressure is higher in rural areas. Thus, while in Nairobi only 37 percent had suffered this type of pressure, the figure rises to 57 percent among those living in rural areas.

In general, the main pressure comes from within the family. This was the case for two-thirds of the women who were pressured to kill their children. In 37 percent of the cases it was their own family that asked them to do it, while in 26 percent it was the in-laws and in 14 percent it was their husband. For the rest, the pressure came from someone in the community, the church or friends.

To a large extent, this lack of knowledge about disability is due to the fact that in the hospitals themselves, doctors and other staff do not adequately inform families of their child’s condition and specific needs after birth. Being disabled in Kenya

The Disability Act of 2003 had given rise to a broader agenda on the rights of persons with disabilities in the country. The movement around persons with disabilities wanted to go beyond that to the international level.

Kenya signed the CRPD in 2007 and ratified it in 2008. In 2011, the government assembled a team of both government officials and civil society representatives to draft an initial report to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. DPOs in Kenya also submitted alternate or shadow reports to the Committee.

In October 2015, we received the Committee’s report with a first version of recommendations for Kenya. The government, working closely with DPOs, instituted a working committee appointed by the country’s principal secretary responsible for disability issues to analyze the Committee’s recommendations and develop an Action Plan to implement those recommendations. This plan was completed and launched in November 2016, giving direction and holding accountable institutions and organizations or officials in charge of implementing the CRPD in the country in a structured manner.

Thank you, thousands of thanks, young people. Especially to that young person with a disability who just spoke to us and reminded us that all people living with HIV are not the same. Each and every one of them is different, and we have to reach out to all of them, without exception. We will keep that in mind. We will act accordingly.

I also want to express my condolences and sympathy to all the people of West Pokot for the tragic loss of life and property due to the torrential rains and landslides. Your grief is our grief.

More than 25 million people are living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, a figure that represents more than two-thirds of the global total of 37.9 million people living with the virus.
