The playing field is rectangular, made of natural or artificial grass, with a goal or goal on each side of the field. The game is played with a ball that must be moved across the field with any part of the body other than the arms or hands, and mostly with the feet (hence its name). The objective is to introduce it into the goal or opposing goal, an action that is called scoring a goal. The team that scores the most goals at the end of the 90-minute match is the winner of the game.

The main rule is that players, except goalkeepers, may not intentionally touch the ball with their arms or hands during play, although they must use their hands for throw-ins.

The defender, also known as defender, is the player positioned one line in front of the goalkeeper and one behind the midfielders, whose main objective is to stop the opposing team’s attacks. Generally this line of players is arched, with some defenders being closer to the goalkeeper than others. If there is only one player positioned further back, he is called a sweeper; if there are two or more, they are called fullbacks. The defenders positioned on the sides of the field are called laterals or stoppers (if there is a sweeper), and because of their position (closer to the midfielders) they can move further up the field if they wish. To name them, the zone is added to the word defender: for example, a defender playing on the right (facing the opponent’s goal) would be a right back. Also the goalkeeper must protect and give instructions to the defenders.
